What The Hell Did I Just Read is the third book in the series beginning with the equally trippy cosmic horror novel John Dies at the End, which I lovingly refer to as the Soy Sauce series. It follows the adventures of John, David and Amy in a town full of happenings straight out of your nightmares. This time, a child named Maggie goes missing and David, struggling with depression and ennui, decides to take the case. The ride that ensues is exciting, horrific and at times extremely profound despite the silly antics John and Dave get into.

Thumbs up:

  • Truly terrifying otherworldly threat puts a lens on the nature of humanity.
  • Various shades of humor sprinkled throughout.
  • Dildo launchers, (urban) legendary creatures, vinyl butts.

Thumbs down:

  • Dildo launchers and vinyl butts.

Final Thoughts

If you embrace the pure weirdness of it, it’s a great time. I think this series does much better in novel form than it ever will in visual format. If, however, you are turned off by the prospect of reading about dildo duels and a body of water full of fake butts, you won’t make it very far into this one before quitting. The novel has much to say about the nature of depression and the human condition — if you take a hit of the Soy.
